Prof. Teng Jinguang, Academician of CAS and President of PolyU, Visits FAHWMU

        On August 1, a six-member delegation, including Professor Teng Jinguang, member of the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC), President of The Hong Kong Polytechnic University (PolyU), and Academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences; Professor Cao Jiannong, Vice President of PolyU and Academician of the European Academy of Sciences; and Professor Zheng Zijian, Vice President of PolyU and Founding Academician of the Hong Kong Academy of Youth Sciences,  visited the First Affiliated Hospital of Wenzhou Medical University (FAHWMU) for exchange and collaboration. The delegation was accompanied by Mr. Wang Zhenyong, Vice Mayor of Wenzhou Municipal People's Government, and Ms. Li Dan, Deputy Secretary of the Longwan District Committee and District Chief. On the hospital side, Professor Shen Xian, Vice President of Wenzhou Medical University and Party Secretary of FAHWMU, Professor Jin Xiance, University Librarian, Director of the Journal Publishing House and Vice President of FAHWMU, together with heads of clinical and administrative departments including the Department of Radiology, Party & Administration Office (Legal Affairs), International Cooperation and Exchange Department and Information Department, attended the forum. The symposium was chaired by Professor Jin Xiance.

        During the symposium, Professor Shen Xian extended a warm welcome to the delegation on behalf of the hospital and delivered a comprehensive briefing covering the hospital’s development journey, clinical applications of artificial intelligence, digital hospital development, and the translation of research findings.

        He noted that bilateral collaborative work under the existing cooperation framework has advanced steadily and yielded initial positive outcomes. Professor Teng’s return visit marks a critical new milestone in the partnership, laying a solid foundation to deepen interdisciplinary integration between medicine and engineering and boost joint innovative research.

        Professor Teng Jinguang spoke highly of the comprehensive clinical strength of FAHWMU and introduced the latest developments at PolyU in disciplinary construction, research innovation, and societal engagement. He proposed that the two parties jointly establish a Lifestyle Medicine Center, as well as collaborate on establishing a joint research institute, master's degree programs, and a platform for technology translation, focusing on non-clinical interventions such as nutrition, exercise, psychology, and sleep, to promote chronic disease management and extend healthy life expectancy, thereby opening up broader horizons for bilateral collaboration.

        In the concluding remarks, Mr. Wang Zhenyong fully conveyed the  strong emphasis and high expectations from Wenzhou Municipal Party Committee and Government on deepening Wenzhou-Hong Kong scientific and technological cooperation, as well as promoting the interdisciplinary integration of medicine and engineering. He expressed the hope that our hospital and PolyU establish a regularized university-local government collaborative mechanism, with initial focus on two priority directions, namely "AI + Medicine" and "Lifestyle Medicine," to be advanced through project-based approaches, aiming for early implementation and tangible results, thereby injecting new momentum into the high-quality development of Wenzhou's healthcare sector.

        As a world-renowned institution of higher learning, The Hong Kong Polytechnic University has achieved outstanding accomplishments in medical technology, artificial intelligence, and innovative research and development, cultivating a large number of exceptional talents and producing a series of landmark achievements. In December 2025, Professor Shen Xian led a delegation to Hong Kong for in-depth exchanges with Professor Teng Jinguang's team on academic innovation and interdisciplinary integration in areas such as healthcare, scientific research, and artificial intelligence, and signed a cooperation agreement, officially commencing the collaborative process. In March 2026, Professor Cai Jing from PolyU and his team made a special visit to our hospital for in-depth discussions on specific cooperation directions. In June of the same year, Professor Janelle Yorke, Dean of the School of Nursing at PolyU, led a delegation to our hospital and held a ceremony for the appointment of distinguished experts, further expanding the collaborative space in the field of nursing. Professor Teng Jinguang's current return visit with his delegation signifies the transition of the bilateral cooperation from a framework agreement to the stage of project implementation, charting a clear course for the future deepening of collaboration.
